Mort McNulty just turned thirty years old, and he's not dealing with it very well. Being the 'king of the practical jokers,' he decided to play the ultimate joke on his best friend, Dave Collins. He was going to host his own wake, after posting his death notice in the paper. It was the perfect scheme. His wife Tricia, thought differently. She tried to convince him not to go through with it, but failed miserably. And so, actual guests started to arrive. Roberta Kluzinski, the superintendent of schools, came to meet with her lawyer to settle her aunt's will. Dave Collins came to pay his respects, while his girlfriend Kay Ingalls came to arrest him for leaving her at the altar. Judge John Fahey's car broke down on the way to a costume party, for which he was dressed up as Carmen Miranda. Grace McNulty, Mort's mother, came after seeing the death notice in the paper. Harley Allenbrand was already there, as he worked at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, and after moving around some coffins, accidentally cremated Roberta's Aunt Wanda.

When Tricia asked the Judge to renew her wedding vows with her not-actually dead husband, she had Kay and Dave answer for her and Mort as proxies and the two ended up getting married after all. John Fahey and Roberta ended up going to the costume party together. So Mort's evil plan was foiled, as Tricia turned his wake into a wedding...and a surprise belated thirtieth birthday party!

So it's the next day, and all of Plymouthson is in a bit of an uproar. Mort is to blame for a handful of mishaps, as well as a dozen other strange occurances. How will everyone react when they find out that he's not actually dead?
